Set up a KeePassXC vault you can recover

Guides admin Updated

A password manager should make everyday logins manageable while leaving you with a clear recovery plan. KeePassXC stores its database in an encrypted file that you control.

Choose the database location deliberately

Create the database in a folder that you understand and include it in a suitable backup routine. Choose a strong master passphrase that you can keep securely. Additional factors, such as a key file, introduce another item that must remain available for recovery.

Build a small usable vault

  1. Add a few test entries with clear titles and the correct website addresses.
  2. Use groups or tags only when they help you find entries.
  3. Test opening the database after locking it.
  4. Make a backup and confirm that the copy can be opened with the expected credentials.

Do not wait for an emergency to discover that a backup is incomplete or depends on a missing file.

Add browser integration after the basics

If you want browser-assisted logins, follow the official integration guide and verify the supported extension and connection process. Keep the database application and browser extension current. When moving between computers, consider how changes to the database will be coordinated so that one older copy does not silently replace a newer one.
