Build a lightweight PDF reading routine with SumatraPDF
A reading tool does not have to be a full document-production suite. SumatraPDF is a useful option when opening and navigating documents matters more than complex editing features.
Set up the reading view
Open a document and choose a zoom level that fits the task. A full-page view helps you understand layout, while a width-oriented view can make continuous reading more comfortable. Use the document outline or bookmarks when the file provides them.
Navigate deliberately
- Check the page count and the opening pages.
- Search for a distinctive term to locate the relevant section.
- Use the outline or page navigation to move between sections.
- Check more than one page when assessing a newly generated PDF.
Some PDFs are scans rather than searchable text. A search with no result does not necessarily mean that the visible words are absent from the document.
Choose a separate editing workflow when needed
Reading, filling forms, annotating and changing document contents are different jobs. Confirm which features the current reader supports before building a workflow around them. Keep the original document and use an appropriate editing tool when a task requires changing the file. The portable and installed editions may also suit different administration policies on a shared computer.
