Use styles to keep a LibreOffice document consistent
Formatting a long document one paragraph at a time quickly becomes a maintenance problem. Styles give headings and body text a consistent role and make later changes easier.
Give the document a structure
Apply paragraph styles for headings instead of making selected lines merely larger and bold. Use a small, consistent hierarchy and keep body paragraphs in a normal text style. A heading’s role should describe the document structure, not just its visual size.
Build a repeatable document
- Write a short outline before adding detailed formatting.
- Apply heading styles as sections are created.
- Set recurring spacing and typography through the relevant styles.
- Review page breaks, lists and tables after the text has settled.
Avoid using repeated spaces or blank lines to align content. These tricks become fragile when a font, page width or printer setting changes.
Deliver an editable and a reading copy
Save the working document in a format appropriate for future editing. If the recipient needs a stable reading copy, export a PDF as well. Check the exported pages for headings, links, unexpected blank pages and clipped tables. When sharing with another office suite, test the actual interchange file rather than assuming that every feature transfers perfectly.
