Convert a video in HandBrake without guessing every setting
Video conversion is easier when you know the destination. A file for a phone, a presentation and a long-term working archive may need different choices.
Start from a suitable preset
Open the source and choose a preset that is close to the intended device or delivery use. Check the container, resolution and selected tracks before starting. A preset is a starting point, not a guarantee that every source needs the same settings.
Test a representative section
- Choose a section with motion, detail and the kind of audio the final file will contain.
- Make a short preview or test conversion.
- Play it on the intended device or application.
- Check picture quality, sound, subtitles and the final file’s size.
Change one important setting at a time so you can understand its effect. Re-encoding cannot recreate detail that was absent from the original.
Keep the original
Save the converted file to a different path and keep the source until the result has been reviewed. Check that the correct title, audio track and subtitle options were selected. For a batch, give outputs predictable names and verify a sample from each kind of source rather than judging every conversion from one easy clip.
