A calmer VS Code workspace starts with the right folder

Guides admin Updated

A code editor becomes easier to navigate when the workspace reflects one understandable project. Opening an entire downloads folder usually adds noise rather than useful context.

Choose the project boundary

Open the folder that contains the project you intend to edit. Check the Explorer and identify the source, documentation and generated output. Keep personal documents and unrelated experiments outside the workspace when they are not part of the task.

Find the tools you need

  1. Use the Command Palette to find commands by name.
  2. Use search to understand an existing symbol or filename before editing it.
  3. Open the integrated terminal only after checking its working directory.
  4. Install extensions for actual language or workflow needs rather than collecting them speculatively.

Read an extension’s publisher and documentation before allowing it into a sensitive project. Workspace Trust helps distinguish browsing an unfamiliar folder from enabling its executable project features.

Keep the work reviewable

Make changes in small steps and use version control when the project has it. Compare the changed files before committing or sharing them. An editor’s successful save is not the same as a passing build or test: use the project’s documented validation commands and keep the resulting output with the change.

Official reference

Read the official documentation for current controls, system requirements and release-specific details. Find the publisher’s download link in our Visual Studio Code listing.
