Keep an editable SVG master when exporting from Inkscape

Guides admin Updated

Vector artwork is valuable because it can remain editable and scale to different sizes. Keeping a clean SVG master helps you produce web graphics without rebuilding the artwork for every export.

Set up the drawing around its purpose

Decide whether the artwork is an icon, diagram, illustration or print asset. Use a page size and a view that make the intended output easy to judge. Keep related objects organised and give important groups meaningful names.

Build a reusable master

  1. Use vector shapes and paths for artwork that should scale.
  2. Keep text editable while drafting.
  3. Check alignment and spacing at the intended display size.
  4. Save the SVG master before creating delivery copies.

Very small exports can lose details that looked clear at a large zoom. Test the real output size instead of judging only the editing canvas.

Export for the destination

Choose a raster export when the receiving application needs pixels, and review its dimensions and background. If delivering SVG, check fonts, external images and any features that depend on the target renderer. A separate delivery copy lets you simplify or convert selected elements while preserving a more editable source document.
